Mazda is not necessarily the manufacturer that is now receiving the most attention, but the brand has tremendous objectives for years to come with, on the program, some fairly interesting new features that, as is frequently the case with Mazda, go a little bit against current trends.
Among the official declarations given by the brand, the CX-60 and CX-80 will be the names of the two new SUVs that will be added to the lineup for the European market between 2022 and 2023. The CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90 are the names of the next three SUVs that will be sold in North America.
What are some recent developments in the Old Continent?
“according to the width of the roads and the parking places,” was how the models were distributed among the various continents as they were being sent. Therefore, broader and taller automobiles, like the CX-70 and CX-90, will only be marketed in areas, such as North America in particular, that can “physically” accept a specific sort of car. These markets include the United States and Canada.
Europe and Japan, on the other hand, will have the right to models that have been adapted specifically to fit their urban environments. The CX-50 is a unique and noteworthy example since it is in fact an improvement over “our” CX-5 and it will be offered for sale only in the United States. On the other hand, the “European” version of the CX-5 will be more durable and will have more modern features.
Despite this, the vast majority of forthcoming vehicles will be crossovers or SUVs. It is expected that the size would rise in direct correlation to the model number. The CX-60 will offer space for five passengers, while the CX-80 will be able to provide seating for as many as seven people.
According to the first rumors, the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90 will be based on a new platform with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive architecture. On the other hand, the CX-5 (and the CX-50 for the United States) will continue to be developed on the same architecture as the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30, which is to say in traction or in all-wheel-drive architecture.
First, hybrids, then electric vehicles
Both the CX-60 and CX-80 will be available in Europe with plug-in hybrid powertrains that consist of a four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric unit. These powertrains will be optional. Following that, the Skyactiv-X six-cylinder gasoline and Skyactiv-D six-cylinder diesel engines will be made available with 48V mild hybridization.
Additionally, Mazda will concentrate on the MX-30 and how it has developed. This tiny SUV is only now offered in an electric-only configuration; however, in the first half of 2022, it will also be made available in a hybrid version powered by a rotary engine.
Concerning electrification, the year 2025 will see the introduction of a new model that was built on a platform that was created specifically for electric vehicles. Lastly, starting in the year 2030, Mazda intends to market entirely electric-powered versions of its vehicles.
Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid model will be the CX-60, confirming the strength of its family car. It will be succeeded by a seven-seat CX-80 model.
In the next months and years, novelty automobiles that aren’t SUVs will become more uncommon. And the same holds true for Mazda, which yet built its name on pleasure-oriented automobiles and tiny sedans. The Japanese company is planning the introduction of a new family model at the beginning of March. And in the meanwhile, we learn a little more about the CX-60’s interior.
The CX-60 will be Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle. Prior to the MX-30, Mazda only offered thermal or 100 percent electric vehicles. Recently, hybridization was added to the inventory, although solely due to Toyota’s contribution to the Yaris platform.
According to information released by the company, the CX-60 will be equipped with an entirely Mazda engine. The SUV will inherit a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with normally aspirated cylinders and electric assistance for a combined output of slightly over 300 horsepower. To learn more, we’ll see you on March 8.
This CX-60 will not be Mazda’s sole “first” vehicle, as another SUV will be released. This is the new CX-80, an XXL-sized 60 with a third row of seats. In the next months, the seven-seater Mazda will also be available in Europe, with a very robust SUV lineup, barring a potential redesign of the CX-3: MX-30, CX-30, CX5, CX-60, and CX-80.
