
In a night of elegance and reverence, Don Julio SA proudly honored the remarkable life and achievements of the legendary director Angus Gibson with a special celebration dinner hosted on the 13th of October featuring the 100% agave tequila Don Julio 1942.
Angus Gibson, an icon in the world of film and entertainment, has left an indelible mark on the industry with his groundbreaking work as a director and producer. Gibson’s illustrious career in television spans from 1985 when he co-founded Free Filmmakers, a progressive film collective rooted in authentic storytelling. During this tenure he went on to co-direct the Oscar nominated biography of Nelson Mandela, ‘Mandela, Son of Africa, Father of a Nation’.
The accolades and remarkable television productions have piled on for Gibson over the years – from his work on critically acclaimed shows like Yizo Yizo, Zone 14, Ayeye, Heartlines, Isibaya and more recently the first season of Shaka iLembe which will be returning to screens soon. One thing is certain, Gibson has maintained his ability to showcase compelling South African stories through a lens that many can resonate and find themselves in.
To commemorate his outstanding contributions, Don Julio hosted an exclusive event, blending the sophistication of Don Julio 1942 with the timeless legacy of Angus Gibson. The celebration took place at the Short Market Club, Rosebank Johannesburg on 13 October and saw the likes of fellow industry heavyweights Desiree Markgraaff, Zeno Peterson, Vusi Kunene, Dawn Thandeka King, Sthandiwe and Tony Kgoroge and many more, raise their glasses to the undeniable impact Angus Gibson has had over the past 30 years.

Guests had the privilege of enjoying a curated evening that featured a guided tequila tasting experience showcasing Don Julio 1942, which served as an opportunity to savor the flavour notes and craftsmanship behind this much-loved spirit. This tasting was expertly complemented by an exquisite menu inspired by the flavors of Mexico, creating a culinary journey that paired perfectly with the rich, caramel notes of Don Julio 1942. It was a memorable and immersive experience that celebrated both the art of tequila and the art of storytelling through film in one curated event.
