The episode featuring Mihlali will air on Sunday, 12 March 2023 at 20:00 CAT on E! Africa (DStv channel 124), available on Universal + immediately after.
Mihlali’s episode of E! VIP reveals where her love of all-things beauty began, “I’d see my mum, aunty and gran getting ready and I think that’s when I really fell in love with beauty. So, I’d steal my mum’s lipsticks, go to school wearing this red lipstick and get into so much trouble. Then fast forward to high school and naturally I’d sit in the computer room for hours just watching makeup tutorials online. I’ll never forget the first ever tutorial I searched was ‘Barbie Makeup Tutorial’.”
Mihlali also opens up on the impact of her father’s death, “The tragedy I experienced with the loss of my dad, it took a huge tole on my mental health. I took a very long break from social media, I think I was off YouTube for four months, I wasn’t consistent on social media for a good six months. He passed away in January and I only started going to therapy in June because I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of talking to someone, I thought there was no one out there who could do anything for me, and I was also in denial about the sudden grief I was experiencing. It took a lot of time, and it gave me a whole different perspective on mental health issues.”
She reveals what advice she would give to aspiring young makeup artists:Â “The advice I’d give to young girls who aspire to be in the same position as me… I would say, don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot achieve what you desire to achieve. It’s very important that you stay determined and continue to motivate yourself. There will be people that doubt you, especially as a creative you’re going to have people tell you that your work is not good enough and if you do get constructive criticism, take it even if it hurts and continue trying to better yourself. Be authentic and be unapologetically yourself, the person behind the brand is really what keeps your audience.”
