South African hairstylist and all-round creative daredevil, André Green, has officially made a splash in the history books, quite literally. On Saturday, 29 November, Green smashed the Guinness World Record for the most underwater haircuts completed in one hour, delivering an astonishing 31 haircuts beneath the surface of the pool at Abraham Kriel Bambanani Langlaagte Children’s Home.
Few world records involve both scissors and scuba gear, yet this unique challenge proved to be a perfect match for Green’s determination. “I knew I was going to be fast because I had trained in water and already understood my times,” he explained. “During the very first cut, I actually chopped my finger, but I worked through it and realised I was still ahead of pace.” His mix of grit and humour kept spirits high throughout the attempt.
The event attracted excited onlookers, families and supporters who came to witness history unfold. Children at the home were treated to unexpected fun as Jak de Priester and Anton Botha created a playful “skiing experience” alongside the pool, sparking laughter and joy throughout the day.
Community spirit played a powerful role in the success of the attempt. Green received unwavering encouragement from his family and the entire Abraham Kriel Bambanani community. A highly skilled team from Reef Divers dedicated their time and expertise to ensure the underwater operation ran smoothly, safely and spectacularly. Their commitment transformed the daring idea into a polished and professional feat.
“Today showcased teamwork at its absolute best,” said Ernesta Teessen, Marketing Manager at Abraham Kriel Bambanani. “André brought courage, humour and extraordinary skill to this challenge. The divers, volunteers and families came together in a way that felt genuinely uplifting. This was far more than a record-breaking moment; it became a celebration of unity and generosity that the children felt deeply. Their smiles, excitement and sense of belonging were a powerful reminder of how much community support truly means to them.”
Support for the event flowed bigheartedly throughout the day, and the spirit of giving is still going strong. Families, visitors and supporters continued to contribute long after the final haircut was completed, proving that kindness doesn’t keep office hours. Donations are still coming in steadily, each one helping to brighten the festive season for the more than 800 children who rely on the care of Abraham Kriel Bambanani.
Anyone who would like to keep this wave of goodwill rolling is warmly encouraged to join in. Every contribution, big or small, helps keep the lights shining, the water running and the sense of belonging alive for every child in the home.
Those who wish to support the cause can send a message directly to Annamart Viljoen at av@abrahamkriel.org Her inbox is open for generosity and good cheer, and the organisation is deeply grateful for every South African’s helping hand.
Joy, unity and hope filled the air on Saturday, and the effects of that extraordinary day continue a steady flow.
