The day before your trip, you will receive an educational e-booklet on the area and what you can expect in terms of wildlife. Once you are on the boat, you will be handed a complementary hard copy booklet to refer to.
The trip itself takes between 3 and 4 hours. If you are in Simon’s Town, the boat ride will take 25 minutes and if you’re in Gansbaai, it will take around 10 minutes. Depending on weather conditions and shark sightings, you can expect to spend 20-30 minutes in the cage. If time allows, all guests can enter the cage for a second time. If you feel more comfortable on the boat and less comfortable in the water, you can stay dry and surface view just as well from the deck. Many guests enjoy the surface viewings as the views of these magnificent creatures from the boat are excellent!
The famous Seal Island is located roughly 30 minutes from the departure point in Simon’s Town. If time and weather allow, guests are taken to the island to witness the over 65,000 Cape Fur Seals.
In addition to seeing sharks, guests see dolphins on six out of 10 trips You’re also likely to see whales during whale season (between June and November) and the African Penguin near Boulder’s Beach. When looking for wildlife on your trip, don’t forget to look up. The ocean is also home to an array of sea birds including the Cape Cormorant and Bank Cormorant.
Some shark cage diving company’s offer a light lunch on board. All dive gear is provided with a dry wetsuit and towel. Once you climb out of the chilly waters, a warm cup of rooibos tea awaits you! At Apex Shark Expeditions, they provide all guests with a complementary aluminium water bottle.
