What could be warmer than the world’s hugest happiness blanket? Sharing the joy of its unveiling! On 20 March 2025, the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement will lay out a spectacular, giant blanket display at Nelson Mandela University’s Second Avenue Campus in Gqeberha, in celebration of the International Day of Happiness.
Over 3500 individual handmade blankets, lovingly created by KnitWits across South Africa, will form a massive installation, with a striking yellow smiley emoji at its heart. Each blanket in the display will ultimately be distributed to individuals and families in need, making this not just a visual spectacle in the form of a vibrant, oversized smiley face but a powerful act of kindness in action – a symbol of warmth, kindness, and community spirit.
With thousands of handmade squares stitched together to form the strikingly cheerful design, the Hugest Happiness Blanket in the World! is a testament to the power of collective goodwill. Not only will the event pay tribute to the late Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service, but it also provides much-needed warmth to vulnerable communities in the Eastern Cape and beyond.
A movement that began in 2013 as a simple challenge, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has grown into a global phenomenon in its 11 years of existence, providing comfort to thousands in need.
“It is so fitting that this year’s installation takes place in the Eastern Cape—the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, a region rich in history, heart, and resilience. This province holds deep significance in Madiba’s legacy, and it is also home to many communities in need of warmth and care,” says 67 Blankets founder, Carolyn Steyn. “This event is more than an installation; it’s a celebration of humanity, joy, and the incredible power of small acts of kindness to change lives.”
A quarter of the blankets will remain in Gqeberha, offering warmth to those in need across the Eastern Cape. Special handovers will take place on 20 and 21 March, Human Rights Day – with distributions to Bethsaida Ministry in Nieu-Bethesda and Paterson High School which, for its 100-year Celebration is running a drive to collect blankets for those in wheelchairs and will fittingly receive 100 blankets. Other recipients include Missionvale Care Centre, Umphanda Foundation for Autism, and Ekuphumleni Elderly Home.
University Engagement Office Director, Dr Bruce Damons, highlights the significance of hosting the installation at Nelson Mandela University, the only university in the world to carry this iconic name. “The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day installation is more than a vibrant display of warmth; it stands as a living testament to our commitment to serving society through initiatives that uphold human dignity and foster community solidarity,” he says. “Hosting this initiative on the International Day of Happiness amplifies its significance, reminding us that true joy is deeply rooted in acts of kindness and collective care.”
The event promises a full day of music, art, and cultural performances, bringing together musicians, dancers, and thought leaders to honour Madiba’s legacy. The morning kicks off with a moving performance of the National Anthem by Tim Moloi, followed by performances from the NMU Choir, The Quintessentials Acapella Group, Toynee Ballet Academy, and the Lawson Brown Steel Band. Celebrated artists PJ Powers, Monique Hellenberg, and Tim Moloi will take the stage with performances reflecting the event’s spirit of unity and joy.
Adding a creative touch, renowned artist Muneeb Wassin will be painting a live canvas during the event, capturing the essence of warmth and giving in his signature style. A special t-shirt design competition involving school learners will also be showcased, with winners celebrated on stage.
Speeches by Carolyn Steyn, NMU Vice Chancellor Professor Sibongile Muthwa, and General Bantu Holomisa, among others, will highlight the profound impact of this initiative.
The blanket reveal—a breathtaking display of colour and compassion—will be the centrepiece of the celebration, visually reinforcing the belief that knitting and crocheting can create a tangible, lasting difference in people’s lives.
