Machere Pokane stands as a beacon of creativity, resilience, and innovation within Africa’s fashion and entertainment industries. From her humble beginnings to becoming a trailblazing Creative Director, Pokane’s journey epitomizes the spirit of perseverance and dedication.
Internationally educated in design and styling, her passion for creativity ignited during her time at the Atlanta School of Fashion in the USA and later at Regenesys Business School in South Africa. In 2002, she laid the foundation for her remarkable career by establishing Machere Fashion House. This venture quickly gained traction, earning Pokane accolades such as the Most Promising Designer Award at Johannesburg Fashion Week in 2005.

However, her ambitions didn’t stop there. With a keen eye for aesthetics and a deep-rooted commitment to African design and culture, she expanded her portfolio into the realms of television and film. As a production designer for award-winning projects like “The Link,” “Afro Cafe,” and “Muvhango,” she left an indelible mark on the industry, shaping visual narratives and pushing creative boundaries.
Yet, her journey wasn’t without its challenges, especially during the tumultuous times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a black female entrepreneur in the airport and tourism retail sector, she faced unique obstacles, compounded by the devastating impact of the pandemic on the tourism industry. Many of her peers didn’t survive, but her determination, strategic decision-making, and resilience enabled her to weather the storm.

Today, as the founder and creator of Zulu and True Story brands, she continues to push the boundaries of contemporary design in Africa. Her role as Creative Director of Infinite Glamour allows her to champion African creatives, amplifying their voices on a global stage. Through her visionary leadership, she not only elevates the profiles of African designers but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration within the industry.
Despite the challenges she faces, including lingering debts from the pandemic, she remains undeterred. With a spirit of tenacity and a commitment to growth, she stands ready to take her ventures to the next level. Machere’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs and creatives alike, reminding us all that with passion, perseverance, and resilience, anything is possible in the world of African creativity.
