An award-winning hairstylist is taking his scissors to new depths – literally! This November, South Africa’s own André Green will swap the salon chair for a swimming pool as he attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the most underwater haircuts in one hour, all in the name of helping vulnerable children.
The record-breaking event will take place on Saturday, 29 November 2025, in the pool at Abraham Kriel Bambanani’s Langlaagte Home, promising a day filled with heart, heroism, and a splash of hair-raising excitement.
“I’ve always believed in doing something extraordinary for an extraordinary cause,” says Green, who hopes to complete more than 30 underwater haircuts, each with a minimum of 2cm snipped from shoulder-length hair, to beat the current record of 27.
Green, the proud recipient of multiple accolades, has the Green Team’s full commitment to make this dream a reality. His team of Champions for Childcare, alongside multiple sponsors helping to organise the event and preparations for the attempt, are offering their full support to share this once-in-a-lifetime event with kind-hearted South Africans, all keen to make a difference in a needy child’s life!
To prepare for this daring feat, Green has been training both technically and physically with the expert team at Reef Divers. Together, they have turned this challenge into a masterclass in coordination, safety, and innovation.
“Cutting hair underwater isn’t just about skill; it’s about control, endurance, and a lot of teamwork,” Green laughs. “And none of this would be possible without the incredible support from Reef Divers, who have made sure I can breathe easy while doing what I love most.”
Reef Divers’ Pieter Herbst adds: “We’re proud to help André bring this bold idea to life. Diving and community service share a common spirit: courage, precision, and care. We’re thrilled to be part of something that pushes human limits while giving back to an extraordinary organisation in such a meaningful way.”
Abraham Kriel Bambanani and Green are turning the event into a celebration. Supporting families are invited to purchase tickets to join the fun on the day from 11:00 to 15:00, with food and beverages available for purchase, heart-warming entertainment, and the buzz of a carnival atmosphere. Guided tours will showcase the history of this proud childcare legacy, while André and his team aim to create a new milestone. Announcements on ticket sales will be made soon, inviting families to celebrate this event at the pool. Please follow all our social media platforms for more information.
“With our slogan, ‘Anchor of Hope’, André is committed to showing the children that they have the love and support of caring families who wish to restore our nation’s hope. This event isn’t just about breaking records; it’s a chance to bring joy, unity, and generosity to over 800 children who call Abraham Kriel Bambanani their home,” explained Annamart Viljoen of Abraham Kriel Bambanani.
If you can’t attend the event, you can still make a splash by donating to Abraham Kriel Bambanani. Every rand raised will help keep the lights shining and the water running this Christmas, ensuring hundreds of South Africa’s most vulnerable children experience a sense of “belonging”.
