Movie Reviews
John Woo gives his old film a modern twist, but adds little new to it
Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel) is a hitman, who is on a mission in the criminal underworld. When she manages to eliminate her targets during this mission, she accidentally causes the innocent bystander Jenn (Diana Silvers) to go blind. Zee should actually eliminate Jenn now, so that she does not leave a witness, but starts to feel guilty for the situation she has put Jenn in.
French police officer Sey (Omar Sy), who investigates Jenn’s accident, discovers what the situation is with Zee and thus also becomes involved in the criminal situation that Zee and Jenn find themselves in.
By putting one of his own older films in a modern jacket, John Woo presents an updated version of his own story, but unfortunately does not do much special with it. He only adds some new ways of filming to the film, such as using scenes split up next to each other. Furthermore, this film ends up as a standard action film, without John Woo really being able to make something unique out of it, as he always did in his older action films. In addition to the same concept of his Asian version, he also seems to copy some action moments from his other films that he has directed. This remains more of a standard action film with entertaining moments, but otherwise not much new.
Instead of an Asian action film, he makes it more of a European, French action film this time, but this has also been done before, such as in the classic film Taken, which is also set in France. In contrast to that film where a father tries to save his daughter. In this film, a hitman tries more to protect someone she accidentally blinded. So this film is more about a hitman with a conscience and a conscience. But that is not really a strong reason behind her actions. The acting is done quite well in the film, but just like the rest of the film, it is not really special.
