PROUDLY SA LAUDS LOCAL PRODUCTION, SHAKA ILEMBE FOR IMPACT ON JOB CREATION IN THE INDUSTRY
Proudly South African has lauded the success of one of South Africa’s latest television productions, Shaka iLembe citing the enormous impact it’s already had and is yet to make on the uptake and support of local content as well as on the creation and retention of jobs in the creative arts industry.
Having already broken records during its first month of airing, pulling over 3,6 million viewers for its first episode alone, the Multichoice production has contributed immensely to our economy having created over 10 000 job opportunities in the form of cast, crew, actors, and administration.

Proudly SA’s chief marketing officer, Happy MaKhumalo Ngidi says, “This ever-growing success story is yet another example of why it is so important to support and to buy South African. The labour-intensive industry is one that is essential in the local jobs ecosystem. The value chain framework is so vast, ranging from pre-production to post-production and everything in between, productions such as these require a range of professionals with diverse skill sets, resulting significant employment opportunities.

The livelihoods impacted through this six-year project include actors, writers, directors, cinematographers, set designers, costume designers, makeup artists, editors, sound engineers, and so much more. We are also pleased to see women being empowered through the production, with 50% of the main cast being female. This addresses transformation and gender equality within the industry. We must be proud of this world-class production which has put food on the table of 10 000 South African households and commend Multichoice for the continued intention to promote localisation and support Mzansi livelihoods through job creation,” concludes Ngidi.

MultiChoice group executive: Corporate Affairs, Collen Dlamini says, “Local films and series offer unique perspectives, authentic storytelling, and a representation of our diverse culture, and rich history. By supporting these productions, we contribute to the preservation and celebration of our local heritage, while also celebrating and promoting our local creative arts industry.
Furthermore, local productions often rely on local resources, such as locations, suppliers, and services. This creates a multiplier effect, stimulating other sectors such as hospitality, transportation, catering, accommodation, music, manufacturing and even construction. As a result, supporting local films and series not only provides direct employment opportunities but also indirectly supports businesses and individuals throughout the entire value chain,” concludes Dlamini.

Proudly South African and Multichoice encourage individuals, businesses, and organisations to support South Africa’s vibrant film and television industry in their homes and offices, as well as at festivals, screenings, and premiers by pledging to the #BuyLocalToCreateJobs movement.
Set in the late 1700s and 1800s, Shaka iLembe is a historical series which explores the making of iconic African king Shaka Zulu, played by Lemogang Tsipa and Nomzamo Mbatha as iNdlovukazi Nandi. The programme airs at 20:00 every Sunday on Mzansi Magic channel 161.
