What began as a fashion trend for socialites and society’s upper-crust has been further amplified by binge-worthy shows like The Resort and White Lotus. Resort wear is now a year-round style that includes daywear that evokes island destinations and idyllic beach settings. Light colours, linen pieces, summer dresses, breathable fabrics and a generally loose, flowing fit sums up the ethos elevating resort wear far beyond the humble swimsuit cover-up.
Jewellery designer Kristin Weixelbaumer from Black Betty says that whether it’s elegant or exotic, the key to mastering a resort wear look is the accessories. “Resort wear is all about layering of beautiful gold shades on the neck to show off your golden tan, stacking interesting rings on your fingers and opting for an elegant hoop in the ear.”
Black Betty secured a collaboration with retail giant Poetry in 2022 which saw the creation of a jewellery range designed specifically to compliment resort wear. “Our new collection, inspired by coral formations and island living, is called Atoll. We focused the range on paying homage to oceanic beauty through a few distinctive, standout pieces that elevate any outfit.”
Through her experience in creating the range, Weixelbaumer takes us through a few resort wear style pointers:
1. New neutrals
Neutral colours feature prominently in resort wear keeping the style light and airy while focusing on striking details to modernize them for the season. To obtain a casual look that is perfect for on-the-go, choose an item that is loose fitting, made of a natural fabric with crochet and eyelet detail. Linen is also a favourite.
Cut-outs
Soft-falling cut-outs are high on the list when it comes to resort wear fashion. There’s no better way to showcase a deep-golden tan and a recent stylish getaway than a subtly exposed midriff, décolletage, back or shoulder.
- Drawstrings
The influence of this resort wear style shouldn’t be understated. Drawstring accents add ruched textured detailing or alternatively draw attention to intriguing forms and cut-outs. - Maxi’s are back
The maxi dress is back, albeit with a little less volume than in past seasons. In a variety of colours, textures and versions that you can toss over a bikini or wear to dinner will be a 2023 escape necessity.
Bucket hats
This season, bucket hats are still a crucial piece of vacation attire. Choose a striking colour, print or texture or opt for natural fibres and airy materials like crochet, cotton, or linen.
