As wine enthusiasts around the globe prepare to celebrate Cabernet Sauvignon Day on 30 August 2024, one cannot overlook the exceptional contributions of Stellenbosch, a region renowned for producing some of the world’s most esteemed Cabernet Sauvignons. Revered by local and international wine commentators alike, Stellenbosch stands proudly alongside Bordeaux as a premier region for this noble varietal. Among its most celebrated producers is Simonsig Family Vineyards, a pioneering Stellenbosch producer that has expertly harnessed the region’s unique terroir to craft wines of notable quality.
Simonsig’s legacy with Cabernet Sauvignon dates to 1977 when their Cabernet Sauvignon claimed the Grand Champion Trophy at the SA National Wine Show, setting the stage for a long-standing reputation of excellence. Continuing this tradition, the Labyrinth Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 recently earned the trophy in its class at the inaugural Fine Wine Awards, further cementing Simonsig’s place as a leader in the field. This wine, aptly named after a vineyard planted in 2003 near 3rd generation winemaker and cellar master Michael Malan’s home, has become a favourite among visitors, who often find themselves pleasantly lost in its labyrinthine paths.
Michael shares a personal anecdote: “I’ve sat on my porch on many summer days, watching visitors venture into the labyrinth with a full glass, only to emerge with an empty one. The experience of navigating the labyrinth mirrors the wine itself—deceptively complex and richly rewarding.” The newly released 2021 vintage of Labyrinth Cabernet Sauvignon debuts in a striking new packaging that pays homage to the vineyard’s namesake, embodying both its intricate nature and the meticulous craftsmanship behind it.
The Labyrinth Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of grapes from three distinct vineyards, each planted on different soil types, slopes, and elevations. This diversity allows for a harmonious blend that showcases the richness, structure, and purity characteristic of Simonsig’s Cabernet Sauvignons. “The blending process is much like the labyrinth—full of twists and turns, but always leading to a satisfying conclusion,” Michael reflects.
At the pinnacle of Simonsig’s Cabernet Sauvignon portfolio is the Tiara, a Bordeaux-style blend where Cabernet Sauvignon takes centre stage. This stately blend epitomises the excellence of each vintage, with complementary varietals like Malbec adding depth, aroma, and richness.
“We believe our red wines have distinct personalities, each uniquely expressing Simonsig’s identity, regardless of the challenges nature presents,” says Michael. “When someone reaches for a second glass, I know I’ve crafted something special.”
Simonsig’s dedication to Cabernet Sauvignon is evident in the meticulous care with which their wines are made. These wines, celebrated for their depth, complexity, and elegance, often feature notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and subtle spices, all balanced by a refined tannic structure that speaks to the distinctive Stellenbosch terroir.
Cabernet Sauvignon Day is more than just an occasion to savour a glass of wine; for South African winemakers and wine lovers alike, it’s an opportunity to celebrate the strides made in cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and to acknowledge the contributions of producers like Simonsig who continue to shape a celebratory narrative about South African Cabernet that echoes across the globe.
