For Hlengiwe Mdlalose, who goes by the stage name Soula, music was never the end goal. Rather, it has always been about making an impact.
Soula, like most artists, started singing from an early age. Her first break, however, came in her late teens when she was selected among hundreds of hopefuls to sing before a crowd of thousands at Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg.
“Just sing from your heart,” Soula explains as she reminisces over that day “God will do the rest.”
Fast forward to 2023 and Soula is releasing her new single, titled I Believe.
I Believe is an anthem that celebrates the power of positive thinking. At most, the song is a proclamation of good things to come. When writing the song, the focus was not so much on the people (or, on the audience rather) but on what she needed to hear herself.
“The purpose of the song is to revive people’s faith in God and learn to trust him with all their desires for this year and beyond,” she elaborates.
The following verse, extracted from the bridge of the song, further builds on the notion of faith and manifestation:
“Whatever you desire, whatever you require, whatever the case may be… Open your eyes to see: endless possibilities.”
Through the song, which is available on all digital platforms, Soula encourages everyone to dream again.
“Just go out there and manifest your greatness,” she concludes.
The name “Soula” is derived from the major musical scale Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. The word play of Soula/solar is what best resonated with her because she feels that she is powered by the sun (reference to son) of God.
