The 2022 MTN8 campaign came to an end on Wednesday evening, 21 December 2022 with the announcement of the Last Fan Standing competition winner on SABC Sports@10. Mbusi Makhanda from East London beat his opponents during the knockout round live on TV to claim this lucrative prize. This was after the top eight finalists participated in a series of challenges such as the penalty shoot-out, fitness exercises, and sports puzzles to book a spot in the final round of the competition.
The MTN8 Last Fan Standing eight finalists were selected through a random pull from thousands of entries received from the ‘recharge and win’ competition. During the MTN8 tournament, MTN customers and football fans were encouraged to opt into the competition by dialling *144*8# and buy a bundle or recharge with R10 or more to stand a chance to win a share of R8 million in prizes.
An excited Makhanda said “I am still not able to believe what happened this evening. I am thankful to MTN for this wonderful opportunity to change my life and that of my family. This is an experience I will not forget for the rest of my life”
Nomsa Chabeli, MTN SA GM: Brand and Communication comments “Now in its 15th year, the MTN8 tournament has produced more than 20 millionaires over the years under the Last Fan Standing competition and consequently changed the lives of ordinary football fans and MTN customers. This remains vital for us at MTN as we seek to bring our customers authentic experiences that can improve their lives while bringing them closer to their passion for football through this sponsorship property.”
Makhanda was not the only person whose life changed, the Last Journalist Standing was also announced, and Buddy Piet Mnguni from Pretoria claimed the title and the R80 000 cash prize. The eight Last Journalist Standing finalists were also taken through different challenges to determine the top three who faced each other off during the live TV broadcast.
“I was determined to win this year’s MTN8 Last Journalist Standing title together with the cash prize. Thank you MTN for creating memorable experiences and including us to be a part of the campaign” says an overjoyed Mguni.
“Everyone needs a win this summer and we are excited for both Mbusi and Buddy on their triumph. These big wins bear proof to the fact that the MTN8 tournament does not only benefit the participating teams but everyone can be touched by this tournament through its various engagements” concludes Chabeli.
