What’s the Story?
At its core, The Drop is a story about three flatmates whose mundane lives take a sharp left turn. Tom (Garion Dowds), a film director with a serious case of writer’s block, and Vongani (Siyabonga Xaba), a visual eQects supervisor with a dry sense of humour, share a flat with
Loretta (Didintle Khunou), their confident and enigmatic flatmate. One ordinary afternoon, they find themselves at the epicentre of a bank heist gone wrong. When a robber crashes into their apartment with a bag full of stolen money, the trio’s ordinary world becomes anything but. What follows is a thrilling, laugh-out-loud odyssey involving botched escape plans, run-ins with law enforcement, and an intimidating Russian mobster who wants his money back. Through it all, The Drop dives deep into friendship, ambition, and the lengths we’ll go to survive when pushed to the edge.
Shot on location in Johannesburg’s vibrant Maboneng precinct, The Drop brings authenticity to every frame. A cinematic love letter to Johannesburg’s gritty charm and vibrant energy.
“As a director, my goal was to craft a film that blends high-stakes action with relatable, character- driven storytelling, with a wicked and sometimes quirky comedic undertone. The Drop is unapologetically South African, and it’s been an incredible journey bringing this vision to life alongside an exceptional team, and seriously talented cast,” says Jonathan Parkinson, Director of The Drop.
“This is more than just a film; it’s a statement about the vibrancy and resilience of South African storytelling,” says Tshepiso Chikapa-Phiri, Producer & Group CEO of Known Associates Group. “The Drop captures the grit, humour, and unfiltered energy of Johannesburg while showcasing the immense talent our country has to oQer. We’re excited to deliver a story that’s bold, unapologetically local, and universally relatable.”
Directed by Jonathan Parkinson and written by Parkinson alongside Athos Kyriakides, the film’s unique tone and high-octane pacing promise to resonate with audiences who crave fresh, unfiltered narratives.
