Meet Kwanda Manyathi as Velaphi.
“It takes more than yourself to be the best version of yourself”, says Kwanda Manyathi, who plays the role of a troubled teen on e.tv’s 9.30pm daily drama, The Black Door.
In Manyathi’s role, the story of a good boy gone bad takes a dark turn as the community takes the law into their own hands. And this is when we see real talent and storytelling craft from the young actor. This 19-year-old emerging artist from Umlazi believes, only the sky is the limit.
Manyathi started acting at a young age, performing in school shows and events from when he was in Grade 9. Post matric, he followed his passion in theatre, believing that since theatre is the mother of acting, you would not have a foundation without it.
Velaphi’s character began as a carefree teenager of the ama Skrr Skrrr generation, responsible, clever and focused on his future as a soccer star. Life took a troubling turn for him when his mother confronted her rapist, who turned out to be his father- a reality amongst too many South Africans.
Over time, Velaphi’s character grew to becoming a class act, as we have had the pleasure of witnessing daily from the comfort of our homes. With the freshness he brings to the role, Manyathi’s serious television career seems to have just begun.
On e.tv this Wednesday, 14 December at 9.30PM, The Black Door shares the reality where community justice meets family and humanity.
