Braamfontein is stepping boldly into the Festive Season with rhythm, colour, and community spirit as Joburg City Theatres and the Braamfontein Improvement District (BID) present Dancing in the Streets, a vibrant three-week celebration of movement, creativity, and South African craftsmanship.
Taking place every Friday from 28 November to 12 December, the series invites people of all ages and abilities to enjoy free dance lessons, pop-up dance presentations, and festive craft stalls set within the newly upgraded Fountain/Food Lovers Market precinct, a refreshed public space designed to bring people together in a safe, lively, and welcoming environment.
The initiative is headlined by Moving into Dance (MID), one of South Africa’s leading and most-loved contemporary African dance organisations, celebrated for its contemporary African dance training, youth development programmes, and transformative community outreach work.
Sunnyboy Motau, artistic Director at Moving into Dance, says: “Dance has the extraordinary ability to remind us of who we are as expressive, joyful, connected human beings. At Moving into Dance, we believe that rhythm belongs to everyone, and that dance can ignite confidence, wellness, and belonging in communities. Bringing dance into the streets of Braamfontein is our way of inviting the city to move together, to celebrate together, and to rediscover the simple joy of shared movement.”
Alongside the movement sessions, visitors can browse and shop handcrafted South African goods, perfect for festive gifting and reaffirming Braamfontein’s identity as a hub of creativity, entrepreneurship, and local talent.
The newly refurbished Fountain node, upgraded earlier this year through the BID’s public-space enhancement programme, has already become a much-loved gathering point for workers, students, and residents. With improved landscaping, new seating, enhanced walkability, and a cleaner, brighter public realm, the space now functions as one of Braamfontein’s most successful examples of people-centred urban design.
Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema of the the Braamfontein Improvement District, adds: “Braamfontein is a neighbourhood shaped by people, energy, creativity, and the rhythm of the city. This initiative celebrates the unifying power of dance to bring strangers together and transform a public space into a shared experience. When a city moves together, it becomes more connected, more resilient, and more alive. That is exactly what we want to spark this festive season.”
