After moving audiences from Mpumalanga to Makhanda, (In)Visible, the fearless and deeply human dance work by Mozambican choreographer Janeth Mulapha, takes the stage at POPArt Theatre in Johannesburg on 11 October 2025.
The performance forms part of a Southern African following National Arts Festival in 2024, where (In)Visible premiered to rave reviews as part of the acclaimed 3rd Space programme. Following a return to creative development, the work now tours across South Africa, Botswana, and Mozambique with its Johannesburg stop promising to be one of the highlights of the season.
A story about what we choose to see
(In)Visible invites audiences into a world where sight is more than what the eyes can hold. Drawing from Mulapha’s encounters with people in Mozambique who experienced sudden blindness, the work explores both the physical and social forms of invisibility and how easily certain people, identities and experiences can fade from collective view.
Through a mesmerising blend of dance, sound, breath, and rhythm, the performers use their bodies to express what words cannot: stories of resilience, exclusion, and recognition. Each movement asks, Who do we choose to see? And who do we erase from view?
Bringing unseen stories to life
Under the direction of Mulapha and the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC), (In)Visible unites a powerful creative team. South African scenographer Jenni-Lee Crewe shapes the visual world, while lighting and stage managers Pumeza Damane and Awande Dube bring texture and tone to every gesture.
The cast (Promise Cindy Magopa, Nicholas Aphane, Promise Mosoma, and Kaldi Makutike) embody the work with striking vulnerability and strength. For Promise Mosoma, who began her journey in FATC’s youth training programme in rural Mpumalanga, this performance marks her professional debut – a full-circle moment of artistry, courage, and growth.
From rural roots to a cross-border journey
Founded in 1995, FATC has spent three decades bringing world-class performance to unexpected places. From its base in Emakhazeni, Mpumalanga, the company has built a nationally significant model for youth and community development through dance and theatre.
FATC’s Managing and Artistic Director PJ Sabbagha describes (In)Visible as “a work of deep listening and radical clarity — one that asks us to look again at what we overlook, and to feel what we can’t see.”
Having already moved audiences in Mpumalanga and Botswana, (I)Visible now takes the stage at POPArt Theatre in Johannesburg before travelling on to Maputo for the KINANI International Dance Platform. Catch (In)Visible at POPArt Theatre on Saturday, 11 October at 7pm. Tickets are available at www.popartcentre.co.za.
At the Maitisong stop, Mulapha will also lead a participatory masterclass, “What the Body Sees When the Eyes Are Closed,” inviting dancers and non-dancers alike to explore movement, memory, and ancestral song.
See it. Feel it. Don’t look away.
(In)Visible reaches beyond performance, pulling audiences into a shared act of seeing, hearing, and remembering our own humanity.
Tickets for POPArt (11 October, 7pm) are available at www.popartcentre.co.za.
