Diana Kinyanjui Power Play and The Sobering Podcast successfully hosted the third edition of the Play Sobering Industry Mixer on 25 September, continuing to provide a powerful platform for conversations that shape South Africa’s creative and cultural industries.
Themed Content is King, this edition sparked an engaging discussion that explored the evolution of content – from traditional forms represented through film and television, to the rise of new-age digital content creation and the opportunities it presents for today’s creators.
The panel featured some of the industry’s most influential voices; media personality Siyabonga “Scoop Makhathini” Ngwekazi; digital creator George “Okay Wasabi” Mnguni; creative entrepreneur Sibu Mabena; and acclaimed film and TV director Thabang Moleya, whose work has made its mark on both the small and big screen; and award-winning international photographer, Creative Director JR Ecko. Together, they unpacked the intersection between content, brands, and audiences – sharing insights on how creators can remain authentic while navigating partnerships, platforms, and shifting industry demands.
The evening was not only about discussion but also about connection. Guests from across the creative economy – including media professionals, influencers, aspiring content creators, and cultural tastemakers – had the opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and engage directly with the panelists whilst enjoying sounds curated by Power Play’s ShePlays DJs. This spirit of collaboration and knowledge-sharing is at the heart of what the Play Sobering Industry Mixer stands for.
